Spent this afternoon and evening teaching the basics of printing in the darkroom. Satisfying as ever, some fresh new prints up on the notice board :-) I made a few prints myself from RB67 negatives for the first time - even in 8x10” prints the quality and detail is amazing. Definitely need to make some more.

Medium Format: Other Photographers
Links to some other photographers’ work
As promised. Where do I start? First, my friends:
Before I met Ben, I concluded from his photos that he spent his time surrounded by pretty girls, brandishing a medium format camera. Getting to know him confirmed this to be the case. His recent portraits and fashion shots are great, as are his photos from Oman.
Alice and Matt shot lots of medium...

Medium format, part 1: Why medium format?
Last year, I shot about 130 rolls of film. Of these 100 were medium format - ‘120’ film. I don’t think I’d be quite so keen on film if it wasn’t for using medium format, and I thought I’d try and get across some of the reasons for my enthusiasm in words.
This is something I’ve been thinking about a bit lately, mostly whilst doing the washing up, walking...

Recommended Films: Colour Negative.
I have a bit of a love-hate relationship with colour neg film. I often find it a bit of a let-down compared to slide, but in the right circumstances it can look really nice. I’ve all but given up on it in 35 mm, so this is all about the 120.
I’ve developed a fair amount of C41 film myself, using Digibase and Fuji chemicals. With a JOBO it’s a breeze, I’ve not tried it...

Medium format article...
…is suffering from ‘project creep’. In the mean time, if you have any medium format film images which you feel particularly demonstrate the advantages of larger film (and are happy with me using in the article), send me a message with a link.
Full credit and a link back will be given in all cases. It would be nice to have a few images that aren’t just mine in the article.
adamsimonsanablogue asked: How did you rate the TMAX 3200? At box speed (1000) or did you push it? Nice tones, smooth grain and great contrast!
jdevere asked: Hello. I have been enjoying looking at your blog - thank you! I too shoot and scan B&W on my V700 with Epson Scan, but have been really struggling with scanning colour negatives - I have tried so many methods and software. Can you offer insight into your colour negative scanning process (did search with no results)? Thank you and keep up the good work! I enjoyed you post on Fuji slide film and...

Recommended Films: Colour Slide.
I love slide film. I have a freezer full of the stuff (over 100 rolls - oops).
Quite a bit of this is expired Kodak E100 (G, GX, VS) - all very recently discontinued by Kodak. This is a real shame (fewer film choices is always bad, right?), but thankfully the films I like the most are still in production.
This one is quite simple, compared to the B+W post I wrote last night.

Recommended films: B+W.
My nerdy spreadsheet tells me I’ve shot over 40 different types of film since I started counting. When I first got excited about film, I was keen to try everything. Once.
Since then, I’ve shot enough rolls to work out what I like, and what works for me. These recommendations are mostly for 120 format - I’m still trying to make my mind up on 35mm. Well - with the exception of...
